“Survived” is doing a lot of work in this sentence.Ilhan Omar’s father, Nur Omar Muhammad, was a high ranking military commander in the Siad Barre Regime as it carried out the genocide of the Isaaq people in northern Somalia — now Somaliland. When the regime collapsed, her family didn’t flee to escape the war as much as they fled to avoid justice for her father’s crimes.

I have no private information on what Rep. Omar knows about current Somali laws. She has publicly supported LGBTQ+ rights and Pride events in the US.Her father, Nur Omar Mohamed, was a colonel in Somalia’s army under Siad Barre. The army committed documented atrocities in that era, but no credible evidence shows he personally committed war crimes or faced specific charges for them. The family fled the civil war chaos after the regime collapsed and received US asylum.
